BANGKOK, Thailand – The future of mobility in Thailand will clearly be more autonomous, said Peter Galli, vice president of communications for Nissan in Thailand, at the recent Techsauce Global Summit 2019.

During a panel discussion entitled 'Autonomous Vehicles, Are We There Yet?', industry experts and executives shared their view for the future of autonomous vehicles in Thailand as the race to revolutionize transportation with self-driving cars continues to heat up. On Nissan's part, Galli said that the autonomous technology will play key roles in shaping the region's city development, and Nissan is at the forefront of this cutting-edge tech trend.

"The autonomous vehicle is undoubtedly on its way to the region. While myriad of driver assist technologies can already be found in Nissan vehicles today, we clearly need to explore what the transition from assisted driving technology to fully autonomous vehicles could entail – in terms of societal and economic impacts – underpinning how these vehicles can shape our city and vice versa," Galli said.

Galli further explained that legal frameworks must also be taken into consideration to create an ecosystem that caters to the automated technology adoption in Thailand and across the region. At the same time, safety and regulatory issues are currently under discussion and development with governments across the world.

While there is still a long journey ahead in autonomous vehicle implementation, Nissan has already taken leading roles in introducing technologies that will lay a strong foundation for tomorrow's fully automated driving adoption. These include a ProPILOT Assist, a driver-assist system that helps keep the vehicle centered in its lane, navigate stop-and-go traffic, maintain a set vehicle speed and a set distance to the vehicle ahead, and a Forward Emergency Braking (FEB) that will analyze the distance between the vehicle and the car ahead, then signal an instant alert that helps avoid a possible collision.

Additionally, Nissan is in parallel continuing with the research and development of an Invisible-to-Visible (I2V) technology – an augmented reality interface that is able to track the vehicle's immediate surroundings and anticipate potential hazards or obstacles ahead of a blind corner – all displayed seamlessly to the driver to support a confident driving experience.

"These innovations clearly showcase Nissan's commitment to meeting the changing demands of our customers here in Thailand and across the region today – and those of tomorrow. Nissan continues to deliver innovative autonomous technologies as well as autonomous vehicles themselves, which is in line with its commitment in building a better future for Nissan customers where cars are their partners, and drivers feel more confident and more connected," Galli concluded.

The panel agreed that the road to autonomous driving in Thailand requires a collective effort by all stakeholders to help build the right ecosystem, including developing infrastructure and crafting policies that will help drive the adoption of unmanned technology in the Kingdom.
